Intel broke ground on two new semiconductor factories in Chandler, Ariz. on Sept. 24, 2021. The new factories (or fabs) are expected to cost $20 billion to construct.

Gelsinger worked at Intel for decades before leaving to work at EMC and VMware. He returned to Intel as CEO in February 2021.

Intel employs about 12,000 people in Arizona, but the two new fabs will provide work for another 3,000 people once production is complete in a few years. (All photos by Andy Blye)
